Transmission Shaft Bearings

The shaft is mounted in a housing in a cylinder, and the housing is designed to be rigid to withstand heat that it will encounter during operation. The fluid that is used in the hydraulic system pumps to the bearings is heated, making the seals softening and reducing friction.

Oil pressure is controlled via a control valve, which opens up as the engine starts to move and contracts as the car slows down. This control valve also keeps the oil from vaporizing and falling into the adjacent intake manifold.

The cases that contain the transmission are often constructed from magnesium alloy to lend strength and to add rigidity to the shaft. The cases are typically bolted to the chassis with bolts. Some manufacturers use bolts and special pins for fastening the bearings to their cases.

The seals of the case used to keep out the contaminants inside the transmission shaft and prevent them from damaging the bearings is often made of rubber or a similar material. The seals are often hinged to allow access to the bolts and to protect the bearings from damage. To mount the transmission shaft to the case, a ring nut is used. However, the most common method of mounting the transmission shaft in these instances is via a special ball-bearings design.

Shaft bearing designs have changed quite a bit since the days of the old Ford Pinto. Today, a wide variety of housing designs are available for replacing or upgrading an existing transmission. Most transmission shafts are available in four different categories: self-contained, mounted in a housing, mounted in the vehicle's frame and a portable transmission unit. The type of housing you get will depend greatly on the type of transmission you own and the specific situation where you need one.
