Transmission Shaft Assembly

Transmission shafts are an integral part of the transmission in all Dodge, Chevy, and GM cars. However, they are subject to wear and tear much faster than any other part of the transmission. The first time you change a transmission filter, there is a danger that the filter will burn through the transmission shaft as it moves through the converter or into the engine. This is very dangerous and often leads to a big problem since the transmission goes into the junk yard, or a wreck yard, before it gets fixed properly.

Before disassembling the transmission shaft assembly, make sure that you disconnect all of the non-essential wires. Also, disconnect any extra belts that are on the transmission. If you cannot do this on your own, then you should have someone else do it for you so that all of the belts are out and the transmission is safe and sound.

Start by unbolting the rear frame mount bolts (which hold the transmission in place). You can do this on the driver's side or the passenger side, depending on which side the car has factory installed. Once you have unbolted them, unbolt the side mount brackets next. At this point you will need to pull out the transmission linkage - a two-speed transmission shift knob on a shifter assembly. There are usually two screws attaching the shifter to the transmission shaft, so it is important to start here.

Unhook the linkage from the transmission side and unbolt the linkage from the backside. This is a lot harder than it sounds, and you may need someone with experience to help you. Once you have removed everything off of the transmission shaft, you will want to disconnect the engine motor mounts.

On some cars, you need to unbolt the side connection bolts before going ahead and unbolting the transmission shaft assembly. Make sure that you get the transmission shaft out of the way, and you need to work fast. If you are a beginner, try to find out where you need to start the transfer gear and make sure that you line up correctly to start it. There is usually a guide with the cars that will tell you exactly where to start the transfer gear.

Once you have done this, you can unbolt all the hardware on the transmission shaft assembly, but you will need to start the transfer gear in the engine bay behind the engine. Start with the transmission side. Put the transmission slowly into neutral and start the transfer gear slowly. Make sure that the linkage is lined up correctly before putting the engine in the park. Then you can start unbolting the other end of the shaft, but make sure you have a secure nut on the transmission side to attach to the transmission. If you did it right, you should have a transmission shaft assembly that can be removed easily!
