How to Find a Drive Shaft With Universal Joint

When you buy a new or used car, the first thing that is usually bought is the drive shaft with universal joint. The reason for this is that it is the most common type of joint and is widely used by car makers and mechanics. It also has a good reputation for being durable and long lasting.

There are three types of universal joint, namely the ball joint, the cross joint and the cap joint. The ball joint is used mainly for engines and transmissions and is usually made up of two balls. The cross joint is the most common and it is used to attach two pieces of metal together. Finally, the cap joint is used to connect the main shaft to the bearing in a transmission.

Although the universal joint does make the connection easier but if one of these joints breaks it is likely to cost a lot more than the other ones. This is especially so when you consider that the cap joint is probably the most expensive.

If you are buying a used car then you will find it easier to find out whether it contains a drive shaft with universal joint or not. Make sure you do some research on the car model that you want to purchase to see how many manufacturers it comes from, as well as the manufacturing year. If you find that the drive shaft has a universal joint, it is unlikely to be any better than the other types of joints and may well be worth replacing the whole joint.

As well as looking for universal joints you should also look at the quality of the shaft as some may well be better than others. The better ones will have a smoother motion and you should also find them to be longer than the cheaper ones. Look at the shaft's rollers too, as they are often part of the universal joint.

A good quality shaft joint can last anywhere from five years to 10 years and you should be able to find parts for them. However, you should always check the shaft after it has been used as you may find that some of the joints are starting to come loose and you could easily end up damaging the joint. So, always check and replace a bad universal joint on your car when you are not using it.
