Balance Drive Shaft Concerns

A balance drive shaft is the link between the trans-axle and the knuckle of the fifth wheel (truck).balance drive shaft Misalignment will cause the knuckle to lift higher or lower than it should, causing the truck to run inefficiently. It can also cause the truck to turn in the wrong direction. When this happens, the tires may lose traction and make poor steering control. To prevent this from happening, a balance shaft must be adjusted properly.

The best way to test the drive shafts is to use a universal joint device. This is similar to a socket wrench; however, it holds the two pieces of the drive shaft securely in place. An example of a universal joint device is the "Bourne-EZ Joint System." This system is perfect for tightening all drive shafts on any vehicle; however, it is not available for older models.

To adjust the drive shaft, first adjust the front end of it using slip joint devices. Next, lower the rear end by loosening the tie rod nut. This will relieve the vibration of the knuckle. Lastly, tighten the slip joint nut again. Once the rear end is relaxed, tighten the tie rod nuts again.

Balance drive shafts that do not have vibration dampers should be tested using high quality hydraulic hose clamps. These high quality hose clamps will reduce the vibration of the shaft allowing you to simply turn the adjustment knob without loosening the tie rods. The result is a smoother transition for a firmer mounting position.

Test different combinations of slip joint and u-joints until you find the combination that works best for your vehicle. Use trial and error to ensure that the proper combination has been found. When testing, make sure to use water to clean the device and the attached components. Water can strip the materials and cause damage to the device and components if the cleaning is unsuccessful.

Balance drive shaft adjustment does not have to be difficult. The steps above are just a guideline. Additional information regarding u-joints and slip joint devices can be found in other articles on Auto Repair Manuals by Joe Berry.

Many vehicles utilize a hydraulic system with rack and pinion drives. These are not vibration dampeners, but rather ball and sleeve-type drives. Hydraulic drive shafts can also experience vibration during operation, even from milder types of adjustments. In this situation, it is wise to utilize proper u-joints and water hose clamps. Otherwise, the vehicle may experience excessive noise or slip resistance.

If your U-joints and splines suffer from vibration after adjustment, they may be due to poor sealing, excessive wear, or a lack of lubrication. Sealing can be achieved with silicone spray, according to your manufacturer's instructions. Some vehicles require oil changes instead of just a sealant change after every few weeks of driving. This allows the existing lubrication to be more effective, thereby minimizing friction and reducing the chances of slip or misalignment. In addition, using synthetic oil in your vehicle regularly will help reduce vibration and accelerate the performance of your engine.

Next, your oil should always be at its correct temperature. The U-joints are usually sold without oil, so it is important to purchase the proper fluid to ensure lubrication. A high quality synthetic oil will reduce the chances of damaging your driveline. Additionally, the proper oils have been designed to prevent damage caused by changing the terrain or driving on uneven roads. For most models, these oils should be purchased along with the correct drain/sump assembly and balance drive shaft assembly, as well as new u-joints and splines as needed.
