PTO Shaft Slip Clutch Diagnosis

When the PTO shaft slip clutch assembly (or PTFO) fails it is a very serious situation. A failure to fix a failing slip clutch assembly can result in severe consequences including vehicle accident. This failure, unfortunately, is quite common and occurs more frequently than most people think. In fact, thousands of PTO shaft slip clutches fail in the U.S. every year. The sad truth is that many drivers actually put these problems off until it is too late and an accident has already occurred.

The term "PTFO failure" refers to the steering column Failure (or failure of steering shaft) that occurs when the PTO shaft slips out from the steering column assembly. If you have not yet changed your steering column or attempted to change it yourself, it is extremely important to do so immediately. The next logical step would be to drive the vehicle into the shop to have it fixed by trained personnel who are fully trained and skilled in repairing this type of steering device. The problem with this scenario is that the vehicle will almost certainly be damaged during the trip to the shop. Instead, consider calling a licensed vehicle maintenance technician who will use his or her own equipment to repair the damage and thereby prevent further problems. This scenario may seem dire, but is often better than being forced at the last minute to take your car in for a botched repair job.

As previously mentioned, a PTO shaft slip clutch failure can occur very quickly. The problem occurs when the shaft slips from the steering column into the track. The next logical step is to take the vehicle into the shop immediately and have it fixed. Unfortunately, if you do not have the money on hand to go to the shop right away, there is no other option than to drive the vehicle into the shop yourself. In addition, driving the vehicle into the shop allows the technician to examine the failed slip clutch assembly before making any changes or repairs.

Once the car is driven into the shop, the technician will begin making a number of diagnostics on the failed steering mechanism. This includes listening for any abnormal noises, which are commonly signs of a clutch failure. A failover system is commonly used to help avoid further damage to the shaft. Next, the technician will inspect the entire assembly for signs of fluid leaks, bearing damage, and bad wiring. If these symptoms are found, the mechanic will make recommendations for future maintenance.

Most often, a complete overhaul of the steering mechanism is needed to prevent further damage to the unit. Some vehicles may only need to be cleaned, and a new set of seals and gaskets installed. However, if the car requires more extensive repairs, such as replacing all of the components, then it is likely that the entire engine is at risk of failure.

Fortunately, most shops have competent technicians who are trained and experienced in working with PTO shaft slip clutches. They will perform a number of basic tests on the car to determine the problem and then give an accurate diagnosis. They can ensure that the clutch components are being replaced in the right order to ensure optimal performance of the car. Whether your car needs an oil change, new belts, or an overhauled engine, a trained professional can assist you with the work needed to keep your car performing at its best.
